It was first named Lambda Sigma Eta Society but later renamed Phi Kappa Phi from the letters of the Greek words that formed the Society’s motto, Philosophìa Krateìto Photôn, “Let the love of learning rule humanity.”
Phi Kappa Phi at FHSU:
A local chapter was organized at Fort Hays Kansas State College in 1937. The faculty of the college had long recognized the desirability of honoring students of exceptional academic achievement and took steps to establish what was called the Fort Hays Kansas State College Honor Society.
The local chapter’s national affiliation was delayed because of the war and it was not until January of 1954 that the national chapter of Phi Kappa Phi was established on campus.
On January 27, 1954, 28 faculty members were initiated as charter members of Phi Kappa Phi. At this time, the only other Kansas chapter was located at Kansas State University in Manhattan.
